Credit Card Transaction Report

What is the best way to bring up a report separating Credit Card Charges by Categories and getting a total for each category for each Credit Card separately?

First of all make sure you are using the credit card module in QuickBooks. Its a special account type in your chart of accounts called "Credit Card". This will set up an account in the liability section of the chart of accounts. It will have a register just like your bank account, and will track charges by vendor, date,&expense account. This register will also show payments from your checking account or other sources, and the current balance on the card. Once you are using this method, follow these steps to get a transaction report:

Go to the reports Menu, select Accountant and Taxes A new menu will pop out to the side, select Transaction Detail by Account Report.

When the report comes up, select Modify Report in the upper left hand corner.

On the First Tab Display choose the following:
              1 - Set date range
2 - Pick these items for you columns:type, date, name, memo, split, debit, credit, balance
3 - In Total by Box, pick account list

On the Second Tab Filters, choose the following:
1 - Account, your credit card GL account. Check YES on Include Split Detail?
2 - Trans Type, credit card

Tips from the Pro

► Why are my backup files corrupted?

In a number of instances, when clients needed to restore a company file backup from a flash drive, the backup file was corrupt and couldn't be used. Remember to use the Windows Safely Remove Hardware feature. Failure to do so is almost always the cause of corrupted data on a flash drive; you can't just yank that stick out of the USB port. That's not to say that flash drives are perfect and data can't become corrupted even if you use the Safely Remove Hardware feature. Don't rely on any single type of media for backups. If you're using flash drives, buy a separate flash drive for each day of the week so you always have multiple backups. Once a week (or, at worst, once a month) back up to the desktop (or another place on your computer) and then burn a CD and take it offsite.

► How can I remove items on reports when filtering?

When filtering reports in QuickBooks, you may want to select most (but not all) of the items on a particular list to appear on your report. First choose the Multiple option from the list (Multiple accounts, multiple names, etc). Normally you would check each item you want to appear on your report. However, you want to check all the items on the list, click the first item and do not release the mouse button. While holding down the mouse button, slide the mouse pointer down just below the list. When QuickBooks is done – all of the items on the list will be checked. Release the mouse button. Now you can manually click the items to remove the ones that you do not wish to include in your filter.

► Why should I always use "Pay Liabilities" window and not "Write Checks" for payroll liabilities?
